Stitch Autumn Colors, a counted cross-stitch kit by Abris Art — a plump orange pumpkin with a curling blue stem sits among purple asters, orange marigolds and green leaves, with metallic swirls on a deep navy background. Worked on 100% cotton Aida in 19 colours of floss.

A little stitcher's folklore: the pumpkin is the old symbol of a good harvest and a full pantry, and a pumpkin by the door was said to welcome prosperity for the winter. Stitchers say a pumpkin stitched in autumn keeps the home warm and well-fed.

Why this kit: if you love decorating for fall, this pumpkin is cosy and cheerful, and its small size means it's finished in time for the season. A comfortable project for beginners, and a lovely gift for Thanksgiving.

Kit includes: 100% cotton Aida canvas, a cross stitch needle, 19 colours of embroidery floss on an organizer, a printed symbol chart, and instructions in 8 languages.

Counted cross stitch is worked by following the symbol chart and placing each cross on the Aida grid with the matching floss colour. Stitch the pumpkin first, then the flowers and leaves.

Finished size: 15×18 cm (5.91×7.09 in). Cosy fall decor for a shelf or mantel.

    This lovely kit arrived quickly. The pattern is large, easy to follow, and in black & white (my preference b&w patterns are easier to follow). The threads are pre-sorted on cards and already keyed to the pattern. Am stitching this now; it's working up quickly and is quite attractive.
