Stitch on Black, a 20 count Aida cloth by Zweigart: a deep black extra fine Aida for bright, high-contrast designs. Light threads and metallics glow against a deep ground like this.

A little stitcher's folklore: Victorian stitchers loved bright wools on deep, dark grounds, which is why rich reds, greens and navies still feel so traditional for Christmas needlework.

Why this fabric: 20 count is an extra fine Aida for miniatures, ornaments and detailed designs, a finer scale than most kits use. This shade suits bright, high-contrast designs and white or metallic thread work.

In the pack: one precut piece of Zweigart Aida, 100% cotton, 20 count (8 squares per cm), in Black. Not included: chart, floss, needle and hoop, sold separately.

Getting started: overcast or tape the edges, fold to find the centre and stitch one cross over each block with a size 26 or 28 tapestry needle, using one strand of floss. A light or white cloth behind the fabric makes the holes much easier to see. Wash finished work by hand in cool water.

Size: 48 x 53 cm (19 x 21 in). Stitched one cross per block with a 2 in margin all round, it fits a design of about 295 x 335 stitches. Large enough for a framed picture, or cut it down for cards, bookmarks and ornaments.

Cross Stitch & Embroidery Fabrics

Discover a wide range of high-quality fabrics for cross-stitch and embroidery, from 14 count Aida to 32 count Evenweave. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced stitcher, choosing the right fabric count is essential for achieving the perfect level of detail in your projects.

What Does Fabric Count Mean?

Fabric count (ct, count, or mesh size) refers to the number of holes or squares per inch. The higher the count, the smaller and finer the stitches:
   • 14 count (14ct, 14-count) - 14 holes/squares per inch (~5.5 per cm / 2.16 per inch)
   • 16 count (16ct, 16-count) - 16 holes/squares per inch (~6.3 per cm / 2.5 per inch)
   • 18 count (18ct, 18-count) - 18 holes/squares per inch (~7.1 per cm / 2.8 per inch)
   • 20+ count - For advanced stitching with even finer detail

Choosing the Right Fabric
   • Lower count fabrics (14ct-16ct) - Larger stitches, easier to work with, great for beginners.
   • Medium count fabrics (18ct-22ct) - More detail, slightly smaller stitches, popular for advanced projects.
   • Higher count fabrics (25ct-32ct) - Extremely fine detail, often used for evenweave and linen stitching with fractional stitches.

Types of Fabrics Available
   • Aida Fabric - Stiff, grid-like structure, best for counted cross-stitch.
   • Evenweave Fabric - Softer, more flexible, ideal for detailed embroidery and fractional stitches.
   • Linen - Natural texture, commonly used for high-count projects (28ct-32ct).
