Stitch on Black, a 32 count Murano evenweave by Zweigart: a deep black evenweave, perfect for bright floss that pops. Light threads and metallics glow against a deep ground like this.

A little stitcher's folklore: Victorian stitchers loved bright wools on deep, dark grounds, which is why rich reds, greens and navies still feel so traditional for Christmas needlework.

Why this fabric: Murano is Zweigart's 32 count version of Lugana, the same smooth cotton and viscose blend at the scale of Belfast linen. Worked over two it gives 16 stitches per inch, matching 16 count Aida, without the slubs of a true linen. This shade suits bright, high-contrast designs and white or metallic thread work.

In the pack: one precut piece of Zweigart Murano, 52% cotton and 48% viscose, 32 count (12.6 threads per cm), in Black. Not included: chart, floss, needle and hoop, sold separately.

Getting started: overcast the edges, fold to find the centre and stitch over two threads with a size 26 or 28 tapestry needle, using two strands of floss. A light or white cloth behind the fabric makes the holes much easier to see. Wash finished work by hand in cool water.

Size: 48 x 68 cm (19 x 27 in). Worked over two with a 2 in margin all round, it fits a design of about 235 x 360 stitches. One piece is plenty for a framed sampler, a pillow front or several small ornaments.

Cross Stitch & Embroidery Fabrics

Discover a wide range of high-quality fabrics for cross-stitch and embroidery, from 14 count Aida to 32 count Evenweave. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced stitcher, choosing the right fabric count is essential for achieving the perfect level of detail in your projects.

What Does Fabric Count Mean?

Fabric count (ct, count, or mesh size) refers to the number of holes or squares per inch. The higher the count, the smaller and finer the stitches:
   • 14 count (14ct, 14-count) - 14 holes/squares per inch (~5.5 per cm / 2.16 per inch)
   • 16 count (16ct, 16-count) - 16 holes/squares per inch (~6.3 per cm / 2.5 per inch)
   • 18 count (18ct, 18-count) - 18 holes/squares per inch (~7.1 per cm / 2.8 per inch)
   • 20+ count - For advanced stitching with even finer detail

Choosing the Right Fabric
   • Lower count fabrics (14ct-16ct) - Larger stitches, easier to work with, great for beginners.
   • Medium count fabrics (18ct-22ct) - More detail, slightly smaller stitches, popular for advanced projects.
   • Higher count fabrics (25ct-32ct) - Extremely fine detail, often used for evenweave and linen stitching with fractional stitches.

Types of Fabrics Available
   • Aida Fabric - Stiff, grid-like structure, best for counted cross-stitch.
   • Evenweave Fabric - Softer, more flexible, ideal for detailed embroidery and fractional stitches.
   • Linen - Natural texture, commonly used for high-count projects (28ct-32ct).
