Stitch on Natural White Dots, a 36 count Edinburgh linen by Zweigart: a natural taupe linen printed with tiny white mini dots. The pattern is printed, so the fabric does the decorating and your stitching sits on top.

A little stitcher's folklore: scattered dots on old linen were once worked by hand as seeding stitches to fill a background; a printed dot fabric gives that scattered look ready-made.

Why this fabric: Edinburgh is a fine 36 count linen for detailed work. Worked over two it gives 18 stitches per inch, matching 18 count Aida, and over one it suits tiny petit point details. This shade suits playful modern designs and small motifs where the print can show through.

In the pack: one precut piece of Zweigart Edinburgh, 100% linen, 36 count (14 threads per cm; older packs are labelled 35 ct), in Natural White Dots. Not included: chart, floss, needle and hoop, sold separately.

Getting started: overcast the edges, fold to find the centre and stitch over two threads with a size 28 tapestry needle, using two strands of floss. The pattern is printed, so each piece varies a little; buy enough for a whole project at once, and test a corner before washing a finished piece.

Size: 48 x 68 cm (19 x 27 in). Worked over two with a 2 in margin all round, it fits a design of about 265 x 405 stitches. One piece is plenty for a framed sampler, a pillow front or several small ornaments.

What Does Fabric Count Mean?

Fabric count (ct, count, or mesh size) refers to the number of holes or squares per inch. The higher the count, the smaller and finer the stitches:
   • 14 count (14ct, 14-count) - 14 holes/squares per inch (~5.5 per cm / 2.16 per inch)
   • 16 count (16ct, 16-count) - 16 holes/squares per inch (~6.3 per cm / 2.5 per inch)
   • 18 count (18ct, 18-count) - 18 holes/squares per inch (~7.1 per cm / 2.8 per inch)
   • 20+ count - For advanced stitching with even finer detail

Choosing the Right Fabric
   • Lower count fabrics (14ct-16ct) - Larger stitches, easier to work with, great for beginners.
   • Medium count fabrics (18ct-22ct) - More detail, slightly smaller stitches, popular for advanced projects.
   • Higher count fabrics (25ct-32ct) - Extremely fine detail, often used for evenweave and linen stitching with fractional stitches.

Types of Fabrics Available
   • Aida Fabric - Stiff, grid-like structure, best for counted cross-stitch.
   • Evenweave Fabric - Softer, more flexible, ideal for detailed embroidery and fractional stitches.
   • Linen - Natural texture, commonly used for high-count projects (28ct-32ct).
