Stitch on Natural White Mini Dots, a 28 count Cashel linen by Zweigart: a natural taupe linen printed with tiny white mini dots. The pattern is printed, so the fabric does the decorating and your stitching sits on top.

A little stitcher's folklore: scattered dots on old linen were once worked by hand as seeding stitches to fill a background; a printed dot fabric gives that scattered look ready-made.

Why this fabric: Cashel is a 28 count linen, a little more open than Belfast, so it is easy on the eyes and the most forgiving linen to start with. Worked over two it gives 14 stitches per inch, the scale of 14 count Aida. This shade suits playful modern designs and small motifs where the print can show through.

In the pack: one precut piece of Zweigart Cashel, 100% linen, 28 count (11.2 threads per cm), in Natural White Mini Dots. Not included: chart, floss, needle and hoop, sold separately.

Getting started: overcast the edges, fold to find the centre and stitch over two threads with a size 26 tapestry needle, using two strands of floss. The pattern is printed, so each piece varies a little; buy enough for a whole project at once, and test a corner before washing a finished piece.

Size: 48 x 68 cm (19 x 27 in). Worked over two with a 2 in margin all round, it fits a design of about 205 x 315 stitches. Large enough for a framed picture, or cut it down for cards, bookmarks and ornaments.

Cross Stitch & Embroidery Fabrics

Discover a wide range of high-quality fabrics for cross-stitch and embroidery, from 14 count Aida to 32 count Evenweave. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced stitcher, choosing the right fabric count is essential for achieving the perfect level of detail in your projects.

What Does Fabric Count Mean?

Fabric count (ct, count, or mesh size) refers to the number of holes or squares per inch. The higher the count, the smaller and finer the stitches:
   • 14 count (14ct, 14-count) - 14 holes/squares per inch (~5.5 per cm / 2.16 per inch)
   • 16 count (16ct, 16-count) - 16 holes/squares per inch (~6.3 per cm / 2.5 per inch)
   • 18 count (18ct, 18-count) - 18 holes/squares per inch (~7.1 per cm / 2.8 per inch)
   • 20+ count - For advanced stitching with even finer detail

Choosing the Right Fabric
   • Lower count fabrics (14ct-16ct) - Larger stitches, easier to work with, great for beginners.
   • Medium count fabrics (18ct-22ct) - More detail, slightly smaller stitches, popular for advanced projects.
   • Higher count fabrics (25ct-32ct) - Extremely fine detail, often used for evenweave and linen stitching with fractional stitches.

Types of Fabrics Available
   • Aida Fabric - Stiff, grid-like structure, best for counted cross-stitch.
   • Evenweave Fabric - Softer, more flexible, ideal for detailed embroidery and fractional stitches.
   • Linen - Natural texture, commonly used for high-count projects (28ct-32ct).
