Stitch on Light Blue, a 25 count Lugana evenweave by Zweigart: a light blue evenweave with a soft periwinkle tone. A coloured ground saves stitching a full background and sets the mood of the piece.

A little stitcher's folklore: a stitcher's stash is the hoard of fabric and floss bought before there is any plan for it, and a few pieces of good fabric are the classic start of one.

Why this fabric: Lugana is a soft cotton and viscose evenweave with perfectly even threads, so there are no slubs to work around. Worked over two it gives 12.5 stitches per inch, a little larger than 14 count Aida, which makes it a comfortable first step from Aida to evenweave. This shade suits baby samplers, florals and spring designs.

In the pack: one precut piece of Zweigart Lugana, 52% cotton and 48% viscose, 25 count (10 threads per cm), in Light Blue. Not included: chart, floss, needle and hoop, sold separately.

Getting started: overcast the edges, fold to find the centre and stitch over two threads with a size 24 or 26 tapestry needle, using two strands of floss. Wash finished work by hand in cool water and press face down on a towel.

Size: 48 x 68 cm (19 x 27 in). Worked over two with a 2 in margin all round, it fits a design of about 185 x 280 stitches. Large enough for a framed picture, or cut it down for cards, bookmarks and ornaments.

Cross Stitch & Embroidery Fabrics

Discover a wide range of high-quality fabrics for cross-stitch and embroidery, from 14 count Aida to 32 count Evenweave. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced stitcher, choosing the right fabric count is essential for achieving the perfect level of detail in your projects.

What Does Fabric Count Mean?

Fabric count (ct, count, or mesh size) refers to the number of holes or squares per inch. The higher the count, the smaller and finer the stitches:
   • 14 count (14ct, 14-count) - 14 holes/squares per inch (~5.5 per cm / 2.16 per inch)
   • 16 count (16ct, 16-count) - 16 holes/squares per inch (~6.3 per cm / 2.5 per inch)
   • 18 count (18ct, 18-count) - 18 holes/squares per inch (~7.1 per cm / 2.8 per inch)
   • 20+ count - For advanced stitching with even finer detail

Choosing the Right Fabric
   • Lower count fabrics (14ct-16ct) - Larger stitches, easier to work with, great for beginners.
   • Medium count fabrics (18ct-22ct) - More detail, slightly smaller stitches, popular for advanced projects.
   • Higher count fabrics (25ct-32ct) - Extremely fine detail, often used for evenweave and linen stitching with fractional stitches.

Types of Fabrics Available
   • Aida Fabric - Stiff, grid-like structure, best for counted cross-stitch.
   • Evenweave Fabric - Softer, more flexible, ideal for detailed embroidery and fractional stitches.
   • Linen - Natural texture, commonly used for high-count projects (28ct-32ct).
