A red and gold circus tent with a Circus sign and a Come All banner opens onto a colourful show: clowns, performers and balloons crowd the ring above a checkered stage, with a lion badge on the front. Wind the crank and the music plays as the show turns.

A little crafter's folklore: circus folk say the show must always go on, and miniaturists like to wind this one up whenever the room needs cheering.

Why this kit: if you love bright, playful scenes, this circus music box is pure fun, with a tune, a turning show and a warm light.

In the box: laser-cut wooden sheets for the music box case and the scene, printed figure and sign pieces, a wind-up music movement with a crank handle that turns part of the scene, an LED light, and an illustrated instruction manual. Not included: batteries for the light, glue and small tools such as tweezers.

Part of the DIY Music Box series: five wooden scene boxes of the same footprint, each with its own tune, a turning element and a warm light. Build tip: assemble the case and fit the music movement first, test the crank before closing the back, then add the scene layers and smallest decorations last. Pair it with the Magic Clock, Forest Greenhouse Flower and London Street Scene music boxes.

Size: about 10.8 x 7.9 x 13 cm (4.3 x 3.1 x 5.1 in), 88 wooden pieces. A charming shelf or desk piece that plays a tune when you wind it, and a thoughtful gift. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
