Stitch City at Night, a tissue box cover needlepoint kit by Orchidea — a row of colourful lit-up houses under a starry blue sky with a crescent moon.

A little stitcher's folklore: Godalming in Surrey had the first public electric street lights in Britain, in 1881.

Why this kit: stiff plastic canvas and acrylic yarn build a sturdy, useful piece that keeps its shape.

Kit includes: extra-stiff plastic canvas, acrylic yarn in 12 colours, a chart, instructions and a needle to make a tissue box cover. Stitch used: half stitch.

Stitch each panel in half stitch following the chart, then join the pieces with overcast stitch.

Finished size: 13×12×12 cm (5.1×4.7×4.7 in). A cheerful, useful piece for any room.
