A little stitcher's folklore: in China the peony is the "queen of flowers", a charm for wealth, honour and a happy marriage, and a peony in the home was said to invite love. Stitchers say a peony stitched by hand keeps romance blooming.

Counted cross stitch is worked by following the symbol chart and placing each cross on the Aida grid with the matching floss colour. Stitch the petals shade by shade from the centre, then the stem and leaves.
