Stitch Lucas, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — a sleepy grey teddy bear sits in the curve of a smiling crescent moon, surrounded by little golden stars, with the name and birth date stitched underneath in soft baby blue. The chart shows the name Lucas and a sample date; you can chart your own name and date in the same lettering.

A little stitcher's folklore: an old nursery belief says that a baby who sleeps under the moon and stars will always find their way home. A stitched birth sampler has long been given as a keepsake to carry that wish with them.

Why this kit: a sweet, personal gift for a new baby, christening or first birthday. The small size and open background make it quick enough to finish before the big day.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), Anchor 100% cotton threads in 22 colours, a needle, a symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the teddy's face, then stitch the moon and stars, and finish with the name and date in backstitch or cross stitch. Plan your own lettering on the chart before you begin so it sits centred under the moon.

Finished size: 13×16.5 cm (5.1×6.5 in). A keepsake for the nursery wall and a thoughtful handmade gift for new parents.
