Stitch Velvet Hugs, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — three cuddly teddy bears in soft pink float with a bunch of balloons, ride a hot-air balloon basket and peek over the balloons, around a "Baby Girl" cloud, a rainbow, a shooting star and pink bows, with a framed name-and-date panel (shown with a sample name) to make it hers.

A little stitcher's folklore: grandmothers say a sampler stitched before a baby arrives brings sweet dreams to the nursery — and it becomes the first heirloom in the family.

Why this kit: a gentle, airy design in just 19 colours with lots of open fabric, so it is relaxing to stitch and quick to finish before the big day. A matching blue version is Magic Hugs (B1445L).

Kit includes: 16-count Zweigart Aida in white (100% cotton), Luca-S 100% cotton threads in 19 colours, 2 needles, a partially coloured chart with coloured backstitch lines and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Work one chart page at a time, starting with the bears and balloons, then the lettering and rainbow, and add your baby's name and birth date in the panel last.

Finished size: 27×19 cm (10.6×7.5 in). A keepsake for a baby girl's nursery and a meaningful gift for new parents, grandparents or a baby shower.
