Stitch Foxes, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — a mother fox tenderly nuzzles her cub, their eyes closed, in warm oranges and creams softened with watercolour splashes of lilac. The design sits on soft ivory Aida, so the fur seems to glow.

A little stitcher's folklore: in many old tales the fox is the cleverest creature in the forest, but mothers are said to teach their cubs kindness first. Stitchers often give this one to mothers and grandmothers.

Why this kit: a tender, heartfelt picture that makes a perfect Mother's Day or new-baby gift. The loose watercolour style is a pleasure to stitch and looks beautifully modern framed.

Kit includes: 16-count ivory Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), Anchor 100% cotton threads in 36 colours, a needle, a symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the faces, eyes and noses, then build up the fur from the darkest orange to the palest cream, and finish with the soft lilac splashes using the symbol chart.

Finished size: 20×22.5 cm (7.9×8.9 in). A heartfelt picture for the home and a touching gift for a mother or grandmother.
