Stitch Garden Nesting, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — three painted birdhouses, green, pink and a tall thatched one, stand among pots of pink and purple petunias in front of a white garden trellis, with a little nest of speckled eggs waiting at their feet.

A little stitcher's folklore: country folk said that birds nesting close to the house bring a happy, prosperous year. A birdhouse by the window was the gardener's way of inviting that luck in.

Why this kit: a cheerful garden scene for bird lovers and gardeners, full of colour and cosy detail. It looks lovely in a conservatory, kitchen or garden room.

Kit includes: 18-count Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), Anchor 100% cotton threads in 46 colours, a needle, a symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the birdhouses, then stitch the flowerpots and petunias, and finish with the nest, trellis and background using the symbol chart.

Finished size: 38×28 cm (15×11 in). A charming garden picture for the kitchen or sunroom and a lovely gift for gardeners.
