Stitch Bird House, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — a snow-capped wooden birdhouse on a post becomes a winter café for a robin, blue tits and a chickadee, with red holly berries below and snowflakes drifting down. Metallic thread adds a frosty sparkle. Based on artwork by Richard Macneil.

A little stitcher's folklore: a robin at the birdhouse on a snowy morning was said to bring a message from a loved one. Feeding the birds through winter, the old saying goes, brings a good harvest in summer.

Why this kit: a festive yet not-too-Christmassy winter scene you can leave up from December until the snowdrops. Perfect for bird watchers and garden lovers.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), Anchor 100% cotton and metallic threads in 54 colours, a needle, a partially coloured chart with coloured backstitch and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the birds and their bright breasts, then the wooden birdhouse, and finish with the snow, berries and metallic sparkle using the partially coloured chart.

Finished size: 25×36 cm (9.8×14.2 in). A cosy winter picture for the kitchen or hallway and a lovely gift for bird lovers.
