Stitch Summer Rubies, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — a vase of glowing orange-red poppies with dark centres and nodding buds sits on white Aida, with a few blooms and petals fallen beside it.

A little stitcher's folklore: poppies were once called 'summer rubies' by village children, who believed a bunch picked at midsummer would keep the house warm through winter.

Why this kit: a rich, jewel-bright floral that brings summer colour to any room and looks lovely framed.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), Luca-S 100% cotton threads in 44 colours, a needle, a partially coloured chart with coloured backstitch and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the dark poppy centres, then the ruby petals, and finish with the buds, leaves and vase using the partially coloured chart.

Finished size: 30×30 cm (11.8×11.8 in). A glowing floral still life to frame and a thoughtful gift.
