Stitch The Chicken, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — a fluffy cream hen with a bright red comb and a golden beak looks over her shoulder, her soft feathers fading into grey and beige watercolour washes. The round hoop is included, ready to hang when you finish.

A little stitcher's folklore: country wives said a hen in the kitchen picture kept the larder full and the eggs coming all year.

Why this kit: a charming farmhouse portrait that comes with its own hoop — lovely in a country kitchen and a sweet gift.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), Luca-S 100% cotton threads in 42 colours, a needle, a white round embroidery hoop (20.5 cm), a partially coloured chart with coloured backstitch and instructions. The hoop doubles as a ready-made frame.

Start with the red comb and eye, then the beak, and finish with the soft feathers and washes using the partially coloured chart.

Finished size: 15×16 cm (5.9×6.3 in). A charming farmhouse hoop art piece ready to hang and a lovely gift.
