Stitch Joy of The Squirrels, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — two red squirrels play in the first snow of winter, surrounded by rust-coloured autumn leaves, bright red rowan berries and a frosted fir tree.

A little stitcher's folklore: squirrels busy in the snow were said to mean a mild winter ahead — they'd hidden plenty of nuts to share.

Why this kit: a lively seasonal scene with 53 colours in a tall format — lovely from autumn right through to Christmas.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), Luca-S 100% cotton threads in 53 colours, 2 needles, a partially coloured chart with coloured backstitch and instructions (a QR code inside also gives you a digital PDF of the pattern). A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the squirrels' faces and bushy tails, then the berries and leaves, and finish with the snow and fir tree using the partially coloured chart.

Finished size: 21×32 cm (8.3×12.6 in). A cosy seasonal picture for the hallway and a lovely gift for nature lovers.
