Stitch Owls in The Silence of Winter, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — three fluffy little owls with russet-and-cream plumage and bright amber eyes huddle together on a snowy pine branch in a hushed, frosty landscape.

A little stitcher's folklore: owls are the keepers of winter's secrets, and three owls sitting together were said to promise a household wisdom, health and good fortune.

Why this kit: a charming winter wildlife panorama with 50 colours, on white Aida with a printed grid that makes counting easier.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida with a printed counting grid (100% cotton), Luca-S 100% cotton threads in 50 colours, 2 needles, a partially coloured chart with coloured backstitch and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the owls' eyes and beaks, then the soft feathers, and finish with the snowy pine branch using the partially coloured chart.

Finished size: 40×24.5 cm (15.7×9.6 in). A cosy winter picture for above a sofa or mantelpiece and a lovely gift for bird lovers.
