Stitch With the Flavour of Salt, Wind and Sun, a counted cross stitch kit by RTO — a big blue-grey pelican stands on a weathered wooden post above sparkling turquoise water, with a soft sky behind. The feathers and ripples are full of shaded detail. Worked in 27 colours of DMC stranded cotton.

A little stitcher's folklore: sailors saw a pelican on a harbour post as a sign of fair weather and a good catch, and old tales made the pelican a symbol of care for its family. Stitchers say this one keeps watch over calm seas.

Why this kit: if you love the seaside and coastal birds, this pelican is a characterful little picture with plenty to enjoy in the water and feathers. A lovely gift for beach-house decor or a bird lover.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), DMC stranded cotton in 27 colours, a needle, a colour symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the pelican's dark outlines and beak, then shade the feathers and the wooden post. Fill the water and sky last so the turquoise ripples frame the bird.

Finished size: 9.5×14 cm (3.74×5.51 in). A breezy coastal picture to frame and a lovely gift for seaside lovers.

    I absolutely love the colors used in this kit! The pattern key is easy to read and follow. I was slightly worried about mixing 2 colors for the couple places it calls for but loved it once I stitched them! Can't wait to get it finished!
