Stitch Grandmother's Old Garden, a counted cross stitch kit by RTO — a white duck with a bright orange beak sits among green grass and pink flowers beside a blue pond, with reeds, a lavender meadow and an old country cottage behind. Worked in 35 colours of DMC stranded cotton on 14-count white Aida.

A little stitcher's folklore: a duck settling by the house pond was said to mean the family would never go short of food or friends. Stitchers say this one has chosen the best garden.

Why this kit: if you love country cottages and farmyard birds, this small scene is cosy, nostalgic and full of colour. A lovely gift for grandmothers and gardeners.

Kit includes: 14-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), DMC stranded cotton in 35 colours, a needle, a colour symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the duck's orange beak and eye, then the white feathers. Finish with the pond, the flowers and the cottage behind.
