Stitch Halcyon, a mini counted cross stitch kit by RTO — a bright kingfisher with electric-blue wings, a warm orange breast and a long red-pink beak perches on a branch among slender green reeds. Worked in 14 colours of DMC stranded cotton on white Aida.

A little stitcher's folklore: the ancient Greeks named the kingfisher Halcyon and believed it calmed the sea — which is where "halcyon days" of peace and happiness come from. Stitchers say this one brings a little calm to any room.

Why this kit: if you love bright river birds, this kingfisher is a quick, colourful mini project that's easy for beginners. A lovely gift for bird watchers and anglers, and a natural set with the other RTO mini birds.

Kit includes: 14-count white Aida (100% cotton), DMC stranded cotton in 14 colours, a needle, a colour symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the beak and dark outlines, then fill the blue wings and the orange breast. Finish with the branch and the reeds.

Finished size: 10×10 cm (3.94×3.94 in). A small, jewel-bright bird picture for a mini frame, and a sweet handmade gift.
