A two-storey Japanese home under dark tiled roofs: upstairs a bedroom with red bedding and a round window opens onto a lattice balcony, downstairs a lantern-lit kitchen and a low dining table set for a meal face a covered garden pavilion, and stepping stones cross a little pond beside a red maple, bamboo and a lattice gate.

A little crafter's folklore: Japanese homes are said to welcome good fortune through a round window, and miniaturists like to light the lanterns before dinner.

Why this kit: if you love Japanese homes, this house has a full garden, pond and pavilion, with warm lantern light on two floors.

In the box: pre-cut wooden pieces, wallpaper and fabric pieces, miniature furniture and finely detailed accessories, built-in LED lights, and illustrated step-by-step instructions. Not included: batteries, glue and scissors.

Pair it with the Hexi Residence or Cherry Blossom Courtyard. Build tip: fit and glue the wall panels into the shell first, add wallpaper and fabric before the furniture, place the smallest accessories with tweezers, and wire in the lights last.

Size: 29 x 20.7 x 22.4 cm (11.4 x 8.1 x 8.8 in). A calm statement display and a gift for lovers of Japanese culture. Recommended for ages 14 and up.
