Stitch Sandpiper, a counted cross stitch kit by RTO — the dark silhouette of a long-legged wading bird walks through shallow water against a blazing orange sky, its reflection stretching out below. Worked in 12 colours of DMC stranded cotton on 14-count Aida.

A little stitcher's folklore: seafarers said that wading birds feeding at the water's edge at sunset meant calm weather for the night. Stitchers say this one brings a quiet evening.

Why this kit: if you love bold, graphic designs, this sunset silhouette is simple, striking and quick to stitch with just 12 colours. A lovely gift for bird lovers and beach homes.

Kit includes: 14-count Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), DMC stranded cotton in 12 colours, a needle, a colour symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the orange sky, blending the shades as you go. Finish with the black silhouette of the bird and its reflection.

Finished size: 15×21.5 cm (5.91×8.46 in). A bold sunset picture to frame and a quick handmade gift.
