Stitch Sunny Day, a counted cross stitch kit by RTO — a ginger cat sits on a table by a bright window, gazing at a big blue vase of sunflowers, with blue and white teacups on the cloth and soft light pouring through the curtains. Painterly yellows, blues and oranges make it glow. Worked in 41 colours of DMC stranded cotton.

A little stitcher's folklore: sunflowers always turn toward the light and have long been a symbol of happiness and loyalty, and a cat sitting in the sun was said to be a sign of fair weather ahead. Stitchers say this pair keeps the house sunny all year.

Why this kit: if you love cats and cheerful, painterly still lifes, this larger design is a rich, rewarding stitch that looks like an oil painting when finished. A great gift for cat lovers and sunflower fans.

Kit includes: 14-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), DMC stranded cotton in 41 colours, a needle, a colour symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the cat and the sunflower heads, then the blue vase and teacups. Work the window light and background last, blending the soft yellows and greens across the canvas.

Finished size: 35×30 cm (13.78×11.81 in). A warm, sunny picture to frame and a beautiful handmade gift.
