Stitch Poppyhead, a counted cross stitch kit by RTO — a little barefoot girl with dark hair and a white dress walks beneath a canopy of giant red and coral poppies, their long stems trailing down around her like a curtain. Worked in 22 colours of DMC stranded cotton on 16-count white Aida.

A little stitcher's folklore: poppies were said to bring sweet dreams, and walking through a field of them was an old wish for a carefree summer. Stitchers say this girl is walking straight into a happy dream.

Why this kit: if you love whimsical, storybook designs, this dreamy poppy scene is light, airy and quick to stitch. A lovely gift for a daughter, a granddaughter or anyone who loves poppies.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), DMC stranded cotton in 22 colours, a needle, a colour symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the red poppy heads, stitching the darker centres first, then add the girl. Finish with the long, fine stems that fall around her.

Finished size: 14.5×17.5 cm (5.71×6.89 in). A whimsical floral picture to frame and a sweet handmade gift.
