Stitch January Sun, a counted cross stitch kit by RTO — bright winter sunshine bursts through the branches of a leaning pine beside an old stone castle tower, above a quiet waterside with a small cannon. Worked in 50 colours of DMC stranded cotton on light blue Aida, which forms the clear winter sky.

A little stitcher's folklore: a sunny day in January was said to promise a fine, warm summer ahead. Stitchers say this one brings a little summer into winter.

Why this kit: if you love castles and bright winter landscapes, this sunlit scene is fresh and rewarding to stitch, with the light blue fabric doing the sky for you. A lovely gift for history and travel lovers.

Kit includes: 14-count light blue Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), DMC stranded cotton in 50 colours, a needle, a colour symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Start with the pine branches and sun rays, then the stone tower and walls. Finish with the water and the snowy bank.
