Build a stapelia star flower, a mini building block plant kit by Wizardi: a cluster of tall slender green stalks tipped in yellow-green rises from a rust-orange pot, and a single red star-shaped flower with an orange and yellow centre opens near the base.

A little builder's folklore: the stapelia is called the starfish flower, and its bold star bloom is said to light the way for good things to come.

Why this kit: if you want height and a sculptural cactus look, these tall stalks make a strong centrepiece for the series.

In the box: ABS building bricks for the plant and its little rust-orange pot, and an illustrated step-by-step instruction booklet. Not included: glue or tools, because none are needed.

How to build and display: press the bricks together by hand following the numbered steps, starting with the pot and finishing with the leaves and flowers. It is a quick, relaxing build for one evening; collect the series and line the pots up on a windowsill or desk, and they never need watering.

A cheerful little gift for a plant lover, a coworker or a teacher, a stocking stuffer, and a calm screen-free hobby for adults and teens. Recommended for ages 14 and up; small parts, keep away from young children.
