A little stitcher's folklore: Amedeo Modigliani painted Jeanne Hébuterne more than twenty times, always with the long neck and almond eyes that made his portraits famous. Half stitch, worked diagonally over one canvas thread, uses less thread than cross stitch, and it gives a smooth, even surface that looks like woven tapestry.
