A little stitcher's folklore: Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted By the Seashore in 1883 after a summer on the Normandy coast, where he worked on the beach with his easel in the wind. Half stitch, worked diagonally over one canvas thread, uses less thread than cross stitch, and it gives a smooth, even surface that looks like woven tapestry.
