Decorating an evergreen tree became a Christmas tradition in 16th-century Europe and spread around the world in the 1800s. Thread art needs no drawing skill: the nails set the outline and the thread does the shading, which is why it has stayed a favorite relaxing craft for decades.

Tap the nails into the pre-drilled holes with the small hammer, tie the thread to a starting nail, outline the shape first and then fill it in with criss-cross passes, one color at a time, finishing with a small knot. The nails are small and sharp, so it is a project for adults, teens and older children working with an adult.

The finished piece measures about 21 x 30 cm (8.3 x 11.8 in). It is a natural fit for a mantel, a holiday table or a kid's room, and makes a thoughtful gift for a holiday host, a teacher or a Christmas crafter.
