Felt the Hanging Llama with Bead Legs, a needle felting kit by Charivna Mit: a cream-and-brown llama with a shaggy coat whose legs dangle on threads ending in wooden-look beads, made to hang.

Llamas have carried loads through the Andes mountains for thousands of years, and their shaggy wool is still spun into warm yarn today.

Why this kit: there is no sewing and no pattern to count, just colored wool, a barbed needle and a clear color scheme, so even a first-time felter can follow along. With just 4 wool colors it is a quick, forgiving project for a first try.

Kit includes: 4 colors of Corriedale wool, 1 color of cotton embroidery floss, beads in 2 colors, 2 felting needles, a color pattern and an instruction chart. Made in Ukraine. Not included: a foam felting pad to work on and small scissors for trimming stray fibers.

How to felt it: pull off small tufts of wool, roll them loosely and jab them with the felting needle, turning the shape as you go so it firms up evenly. Build the body first, then the colored details and the face, following the color scheme. Then add the bead details and the embroidered details as the instructions show. Attach the hanging thread last. Work on a foam pad and store the needles safely after use.

Finished size: about 16×11.5 cm (6.3×4.5 in). Hang it at a window, on a shelf bracket or a nursery mobile, or give it as a small homemade gift for animal lovers, teens and friends. Recommended for ages 14 and up; the felting needles are very sharp, so keep them away from young children.
