Felters call wool painting painting without paint: you mix colors the way a painter does, by laying thin wisps of two shades over each other until they blend.

Why this kit: wool painting needs no drawing skills and no counting. You lay thin wisps of colored wool like brushstrokes, then felt the flowers and details on top so they stand up in soft 3D, and the picture comes together in a few relaxed evenings.

Kit includes: wool roving in the colors of the picture, felting tools and step-by-step picture instructions. Not included: an easel or a wall hook for display.

How to felt it: start with the sky and background, laying thin, even layers of wool over the base and felting them flat with light, straight jabs. Then add the middle ground, and finish with the raised details, rolling small tufts into petals, leaves and shapes before felting them in place. Keep the needle upright so it does not snap, and store it safely after use.

Finished size: about 7.9 in (20 cm) across. Hang it on the wall, stand it on a small easel or give it as homemade wall art to a gardener, a nature lover or anyone who likes a quiet evening craft. Recommended for ages 14 and up; the felting needles are very sharp, so keep them away from young children.
