Stitch A Murmuration of Starlings, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a flock of starlings wheels across a pink winter sunset above snowy hills, white trees and a lit cottage.

A little stitcher's folklore: a murmuration can hold hundreds of thousands of starlings, each bird following its seven nearest neighbours so the whole cloud turns as one.

Why this kit: based on artwork by Lizzie Spikes of Driftwood Designs, it is from the Bothy Threads Winter 2025 Collection and uses only cross stitch and back stitch.

Kit includes: 14-count white Zweigart Aida, pre-sorted stranded cottons, a needle and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: cross stitch and back stitch. A frame is not included.

Stitch the sky and landscape in cross stitch from the centre, then pick out the birds, trees and title in back stitch.

Finished size: 26×36 cm (10.2×14.2 in). A wintry scene for a birdwatcher's mantelpiece.
