Stitch Acorns, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a red squirrel with a bushy tail pauses on the ground beside a fallen leaf.

A little stitcher's folklore: squirrels bury thousands of acorns each autumn and forget many of them, which is how oak woods spread.

Why this kit: a 15 cm round design by Hannah Dale of Wrendale Designs, sized to display in an embroidery hoop, and a quick, satisfying project, in Bothy Threads' plastic-free packaging.

Kit includes: 14-count white Zweigart Aida printed with an exclusive speckled background, pre-sorted stranded cottons, a needle and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: full cross stitches, fractionals, back stitch and one French knot. The hoop shown is not included.

Stitch the squirrel in cross stitch and fractionals from the centre, then add the whiskers in back stitch and the French knot.

Finished size: 15 cm round (5.9 in). A small autumn piece to finish in a hoop.
