Stitch Teacup Pup, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a fluffy puppy peeks out of a pink polka-dot teacup and saucer.

A little stitcher's folklore: 'teacup' puppies are simply very small dogs; the name comes from photos of them tucked inside real teacups.

Why this kit: a 15 cm round design by Hannah Dale of Wrendale Designs, sized to display in an embroidery hoop, and a quick, satisfying project, in Bothy Threads' plastic-free packaging.

Kit includes: 14-count white Zweigart Aida printed with an exclusive speckled background, pre-sorted stranded cottons, a needle and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: full cross stitches, back stitch and French knots. The hoop shown is not included.

Stitch the puppy and cup in cross stitch from the centre, then add the outlines in back stitch and the French knots.

Finished size: 15 cm round (5.9 in). A cute gift for a new puppy owner.
