Stitch Bessie, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a brown calf with fluffy ears stands among bright red tulips.

A little stitcher's folklore: 'Bessie' has been a favourite name for dairy cows for generations, a pet form of Elizabeth.

Why this kit: a Wrendale Designs favourite by Hannah Dale, it is full of character, with plenty of expression to bring out as you stitch.

Kit includes: 14-count Zweigart Aida printed with an exclusive speckled background, pre-sorted stranded cottons and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: cross stitch and back stitch. A frame is not included.

Stitch the calf and tulips in cross stitch from the centre, then add the outlines in back stitch.

Finished size: 24×29 cm (9.4×11.4 in). A cheerful spring piece for a farmhouse kitchen.
