Stitch Sleeping on the Job, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a border collie naps in a wheelbarrow full of vegetables while two rabbits nibble the carrots below.

A little stitcher's folklore: border collies can learn hundreds of words; one famous collie, Chaser, knew the names of over a thousand toys.

Why this kit: Hannah Dale's loose, watercolour-style animals translate beautifully into stitch, and the printed speckle on the Aida gives the finished piece its signature Wrendale feel.

Kit includes: 16-count white Zweigart Aida printed with an exclusive speckled background, pre-sorted stranded cottons, a needle and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: cross stitch and back stitch. A frame is not included.

Stitch the barrow, dog and rabbits in cross stitch from the centre, then add the outlines in back stitch.

Finished size: 34×28 cm (13.4×11 in). A funny gardening piece for a dog lover.
