Stitch Trick or Treat, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a cat, a hedgehog and a mouse in witches' hats carry a pumpkin lantern past a haunted house, with owls on a branch, bats, a spider and ghosts saying 'boo' and 'eek'.

A little stitcher's folklore: trick-or-treating grew from the old Scottish and Irish custom of guising, when children dressed up and performed for treats.

Why this kit: in Margaret Sherry's playful style, it includes glow-in-the-dark thread, so parts of the spooky scene glow after dark, plus star sequins for sparkle.

Kit includes: 14-count misty blue Zweigart Aida, pre-sorted stranded cottons, glow-in-the-dark thread, star sequins, a needle and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: full cross stitches, back stitch and two French knots. A frame is not included.

Stitch the scene in cross stitch from the centre, add the outlines and lettering in back stitch and the French knots, then sew on the star sequins.

Finished size: 29×24 cm (11.4×9.4 in). A fun Halloween piece to bring out every October.
