Stitch Spices and Herbs, a counted cross stitch kit by Luca-S — nine named herb sprigs, basil, oregano, tarragon, rosemary, mint, parsley, bay, dill and thyme, set out in a neat grid on natural linen-coloured Aida. The warm fabric gives this version a rustic, farmhouse-kitchen feel.

A little stitcher's folklore: country cooks said that parsley grows best in a happy house, mint keeps the mice away and a sprig of dill over the door keeps away bad luck. A kitchen with all nine was thought to be well protected.

Why this kit: a rustic herb sampler that suits a country kitchen perfectly; the grid layout lets you stitch one herb at a time in short, relaxing sessions. It's also lovely stitched in parts for sachets or cards.

Kit includes: 16-count natural Zweigart Aida (100% cotton), Anchor 100% cotton threads in 19 colours, a needle, a symbol chart and instructions. A frame and hoop are not included.

Stitch the herbs one by one, following the grid on the chart, then add the names in backstitch last.

Finished size: 21.5×30.5 cm (8.5×12 in). A rustic herb sampler for the kitchen wall and a lovely gift for keen cooks and gardeners.
